The Cornfield was painted in 1918 when John and his brother Paul returned to England after serving on the Western Front. The brothers rented a studio in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire and would paint for their own pleasure after six o’clock, when their war commissions had been completed. This beautiful English landscape captures the long shadows cast by the evening sun across a golden field of corn. After the horrors of trench warfare, this work – Nash’s first of 1918 not to feature war – stands as a powerful symbol of what was being fought for and the many sacrifices made.
