During the 1790s, George III spent his holidays in the Dorset port of Weymouth, establishing it as the first English seaside resort, and in 1808 this wonderful equestrian figure was carved into nearby Osmington Hill to celebrate his patronage. According to legend, the king took offence at the positioning of the figure, which faces away from the town, and never returned, but in fact he visited Weymouth for the last time several years’ earlier. Ravilious painted this horse on a whistlestop tour of chalk figures in December 1939 prior to his appointment as an official war artist. ‘Chalk Figure Near Weymouth’, housed in the National Gallery of Canada, is regarded as one of the artist’s most iconic paintings. In August 1938 Ravilious visited the beautiful Suffolk seaside town of Aldeburgh. There he painted a group of unusually vivid watercolours, including two studies of the town’s idiosyncratic bathing machines and this exuberant picture of a lifeboat. This craft, named the Abdy Beauclerk after a keen yachtsman who had died twenty years earlier, had been launched in May 1932 by Prince Albert (the future George VI). She went on to enjoy a long and distinguished career, carrying out the first rescue of World War II on 10 September 1939 and subsequently taking part in the Dunkirk
evacuation. A percentage from all sales of this print is being donated to the owner’s chosen charity, Help for Heroes. This is particularly appropriate given that Ravilious was an Official War Artist, and tragically disappeared on a reconnaissance mission off the coast of Iceland on 2 September 1942.

A passenger train, blazing with light, crosses a bridge over a country lane, illuminating the dark village for a few moments as a magnificent plume of smoke billows from the funnel. Ravilious was a train traveller both by inclination and by necessity, and here he shows a train from the perspective of villagers whose streets are dark and whose homes are lit by candles. The artist painted this view in 1935 from the top of the “old hump-backed” river bridge over the River Colne, which marks the
parish boundary between Castle and Sible Hedingham. At this time Ravilious was living in Bank House, Castle Hedingham with his wife Tirzah, and this painting is one of a series featuring scenes from his life in Essex.

The soft bright light of the South Downs floods through an open door into a room that could hardly be plainer. The brick floor is uncovered, the walls undecorated, but red curtains hang at the window and the brightness of the countryside beyond fills the room with life. An overcoat hanging behind the open door and a bentwood chair in front of the window give the painting a mysterious, even dreamlike quality. The cottage shown is Furlongs and was rented by Ravilious’s friend Peggy Angus and became a hive of artistic activity throughout the 1930’s. When Eric’s wife Tirzah visited the cottage she brought marbling apparatus and sheets of Michallet paper, and set about making colourful patterned wallpaper. Paintings by Angus and her guests hung on the walls, illuminated at night by oil lamps. With a fire of sticks and branches gathered from the woods, the small sitting room became a cosy retreat after a day of outdoor painting in springtime. Edition size limited to 500 copies. The Cornfield was painted in 1918 when John and his brother Paul returned to England after serving on the Western Front. The brothers rented a studio in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire and would paint for their own pleasure after six o’clock, when their war commissions had been completed. This beautiful English landscape captures the long shadows cast by the evening sun across a golden field of corn. After the horrors of trench warfare, this work – Nash’s first of 1918 not to feature war – stands as a powerful symbol of what was being fought for and the many sacrifices made.

In 1935, when she was nineteen years old, she became a student at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in London, where she was taught by the master print-makers Iain Macnab and Cyril Power. Over the next four years she exhibited her oil-paintings and wood-engravings to great acclaim in the press. Sadly her career was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. The Grosvenor School closed in 1939. She married Michael Franklin in 1940, had three children, and produced no more large-scale paintings, though continuinued to work in pastels and chalk. She died in 1992.

This wonderful seaside scene shows the Royal Albion Hotel in Bognor Regis. Like many of Cooper’s paintings it draws on happy childhood memories of holidays spent by the sea. The original painting is owned by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and was a gift of Lucy Carrington Wertheim in 1948.

As a child Suzanne Cooper would often go on daytrips to Brixham while staying with her grandparents in Torquay. She captures the magic of this beautiful seaside town, its port and rich maritime history. Trips to Torquay were part Suzanne Cooper’s childhood and her paintings of the 1930s seem to capture things seen in the present and evoke memories from the past.
This painting casts the fashionable attractions of Torquay Pavilion and the Church of St John the Apostle into the distance, drawing the eye to the business end of a working port. The harbour, on Torbay’s north shore, is enclosed by two piers and adamantine walls. In the foreground two fishermen check their nets for damage while discussing the morning’s catch.
